A Cup of Tea
Nan-in received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he could restrain himself no longer. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”
“Like this cup”, Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”
We come to many different situations. Sometimes we are Nan-in, but sometimes it seems more often we are The Professor, so full of what we think we know.
This is a joy of being a massage therapist, emptying our cups before each session to try to see the client as they are right in that session. We learn so we can teach. We teach so we can learn.
